Abstract: In this project we hope to characterize the effects of high energy particles on a multi-wire proportional chamber used in the CLEO III RICH photon detection array
Using one of the Multi-wire Proportional Chambers (MWPC) from the detector array we will investigate the effects of extensive exposure to charge difference on the cathode pads. To understand the effects that the interactions are having on the chamber we have decided to monitor the gain in the system. The sources we are going to use are cosmic ray muons and Fe55. The gain of the system requires analyzing the number of photons vs. pulse heights. This analysis should result in an exponential distribution. Then by subtracting out the background distribution and fitting the slope it provides a measurement of the gain. To collect the data, with minimum noise, will require designing a trigger device.
